Two thousand years ago, there were no cranes, no concrete, and certainly no power tools. The Tujia people utilized a method of Interlocking Wood Beams known as "Mortise and Tenon." Every house in Furong Town is a puzzle of wood. By carving notches into massive cedar pillars, they created joints that could "flex." When an earthquake hits or the waterfall causes the ground to vibrate, these buildings don't crack—they sway. They also drove massive wooden pillars 10 to 20 meters deep into the cliff bedrock. While the water roars below, these pillars remain steady. The 60-meter waterfall acts as a natural moat. With the river on three sides and sheer, jagged cliffs on the fourth, any invading army would be spotted miles away. The Tusi Palace was built at the highest point of this Ancient Chinese Village, allowing the King to look down upon the river approach.
